When Sucker was released in December 2014, the album marked Charli XCX's entry into the mainstream's pop-punk and bubblegum rock universe. In the wake of the global success of Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," in which she featured, and her own megahit "Boom Clap," Charli created the album Sucker as a defiant middle finger to the traditional pop industry's expectations. Where the debut was characterized by dark synth landscapes, Suckerinstead offered sharp guitar riffs, group vocals, and self-assured lyrics, cementing her reputation as a fearless and unpredictable pop star.

Sucker sent Charli XCX onto charts worldwide with a series of successful singles, led by the soundtrack hit "Boom Clap," the pop-punk anthem "Break the Rules," and the satirical "Doing It."
